The Black French Bulldog: An Elegant Looking Frenchie

Frenchies come in a variety of colors. Even tho the black French Bulldog is not officially approved by the ACK, they are still very popular.

French Bulldogs remain one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Originally, French Bulldogs were available in dark colors only, but the situation changed in the mid-1990s, and today there is a great range of colors available. According to the American Kennel Club (ACK), the following colors of Frenchies are officially approved: Fawn, Fawn and Bridle, Red, White, Red Bridle and White, Fallow, Fawn Bridle and White, and Red Bridle. Other colors, including black, are not desirable. At the same time, the black French Bulldog is very popular due to its solid and elegant look.

What Is A Black French Bulldog?

Black French Bulldogs have a solid black coat, without any markings or traces and spots of any other color. Unfortunately, the black coat color of Frenchies is not accepted by the American Kennel Club, which means that black French Bulldogs cannot participate in dog shows and competitions. However, they are still great dogs that can become perfect companions and full family members. 

In general, the appearance of the Black French Bulldog is similar to the standard Frenchie. They have muscular and stockily bodies, short legs, and their height is approximately 12 inches. The weight is usually between 20 and 28 lbs. 

Just like standard Frenchies, Black French Bulldogs have a fine and smooth coat and wrinkled and loose skin, especially around their neck and head.

How Much Is a Black French Bulldog?

Black Frenchies are rare and quite popular today. Therefore, even though the black coat color is not approved by the American Kennel Club,  they are more expensive than standard Frenchies. The average price of a Black Frenchie puppy in the United States today is between $3,500 and $4,500.

What are the French Bulldog Standard Colors?

As mentioned above, there are several approved standard colors of French Bulldogs:  Fawn, Fawn and Bridle, Red, White, Red Bridle and White, Fallow, Fawn Bridle and White, and Red Bridle.

Black Frenchies are not Recognized by the AKC

Unfortunately, the American Kennel Club does not recognize the black coat color of Frenchies. The main reason is that pure French Bulldogs cannot be naturally black. Therefore,  this color is labeled as a “fad color” by kennel clubs in all countries. 

It is discouraged to breed and purchase black French Bulldogs because it is believed that they harm the breed. According to research, black Frenchies are carriers of the deaf gene and can produce dogs with blue eyes that might have serious eye problems. 

In addition, the gene that is responsible for the black coat is very dominant and can cause the loss of other coat colors.

Black French Bulldogs Can be Mixed With Pugs

Pugs are often black,  and they are often mixed with French Bulldogs. When you cross a Frenchie with a Pug, the result is a very cute mix – the Frug.  Frugs look like French bulldogs, but they are actually not. If you are not an experienced dog owner, you may not even notice the difference, thinking that you are buying a French Bulldog puppy, while it is just a mix.

How Rare Are Black French Bulldogs?

Black French Bulldogs are relatively rare, which makes them very popular. Responsible breeders try not to breed Black Frenchies because they believe that this color can harm the breed and cause serious health issues in dogs.

How Much Does a French Bulldog Cost?

Since Frenchies are among the most popular dog breeds in the United States, they are not cheap. The average cost of a French Bulldog puppy in the US is between $1,500 and $3,000. The price might fluctuate depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. 

If you do not want to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder and want to save money, you can also adopt a French Bulldog from one of rescue centers. However, if you consider this option, you may have to wait until a dog is available.

Black French Bulldogs Special Cares and Needs

Taking care of a Black Frenchie is similar to taking care of a standard French Bulldog. There are certain things you need to know and take into consideration as an owner of this specific dog:

Diet

Your Frenchie should receive enough protein every day from meat, fish, and poultry. The everyday diet of your canine should also include enough fat that provides energy and omega fatty acids that are responsible for a shiny coat and healthy skin. Do not forget to add some vegetables to your dog’s diet. Frenchies like the taste and crunchy texture of such vegetables as pumpkin, spinach, squash, and Brussel sprouts. Moreover, these vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals.

Exercise

In general, French bulldogs are not as active as other breeds. but they still need some exercise. Since most adult Frenchies have breathing problems, slow and low-intensity walks are the best type of physical activity for them.

Do Black French Bulldogs Shed?

Yes, all French Bulldogs, including Black Frenchies, shed year round. During the warmer months, they shed more as they lose their winter coats. Depending on the climate you live in, your Frenchie should shed two to three times a year.

Unfortunately, French Bulldogs are known for certain health issues. If you want to become a dog owner of this unique dog breed, you should be well prepared.

How Long Do Black Frenchies Live?

Just like any other French Bulldog, Black Frenchies live between 10 and 14 years.

Eye and ear health problems are very common among French bulldogs, regardless of their coat color. The most common eye issues include cherry eye, dry eye, ulcers, and eyelid problems. Ear infections are also not rare and often affect Frenchies when they are only a few weeks old.

It is the most common inherited bleeding disorder that affects certain dog breeds, including French Bulldogs. It is a serious condition that can cause uncontrolled bleeding and even death.

BOAS in Black French Bulldogs

BOAS is known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, and it is the most common breathing problem among such dog breeds as French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, and Pekingese. This condition is usually characterized by snoring, intolerance to exercise and heat, gagging, loud breathing, and even vomiting. The only treatment for BOAS surgery that shows good results for 95-98%  of dogs.

In general, Frenchies are known for their friendly personality, which makes them perfect companions and family members. They get along perfectly with kids and other animals.

Are Black French Bulldog Easy Dogs?

Frenchies are known for their stubborn personality and short attention spans, so they might be not easy to train. However, in general, they are not difficult dogs to deal with.

Are Black French Bulldogs Aggressive?

In general, they are not. Instead, they are known as friendly, social, and affectionate dogs with a very low risk of aggression. Sometimes, they can be aggressive, like any other dog breed, but usually, their aggression indicates an injury, illness, or fear.

Do Black French Bulldogs Bark a Lot?

No, French Bulldogs, including Black Frenchies, are quiet dogs and do not bark a lot. Their quiet personality makes them perfect canines for urban living in apartments and condominiums.
